Have you had a chance to check out the Somerset Bridlewood Community Association’s Little Resource Library yet? Located on the southeast side of the community garden, this special booth was constructed as part of the ClimateReadyYYC grant program offered by the City of Calgary and administered by the Federation of Calgary Communities. The library holds seeds for vegetables, herbs, and pollinator-friendly flowers in the spring and summer and cold-weather items such as mittens, toques, emergency blankets, and handwarmers in the fall and winter. The items in the library are free for everyone to use as needed. If you wish to donate new, unused winter items to the Library, please contact [email protected].
In June, the Somerset Bridlewood Community Garden completed work on a big project using grant funding awarded by Lloyd Sadd Insurance and administered by the Federation of Calgary Communities. The old worn-out wooden perimeter communal garden beds, which hold perennial flowers and herbs, were replaced by six new metal raised beds. The new beds look fantastic and will be durable for years to come.
A huge thank you to storyteller and gardener Carley, who hosted story time at the garden through the spring and summer! The program is expected to continue next year.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Parade of Garage Sales in early June! The Somerset Bridlewood Community Association would like to thank local realtor Mona Kapoor for her partnership in the event and for providing the garage sale signs for participants to use. (If you still have one of these signs kicking around in your garage or basement, please return it to the community garden. You can just tip it over the fence, and we’ll retrieve it. We’d like to reuse it at our next POGS event.) Mona also spearheaded a successful donation drive for the Kidney Foundation in conjunction with the POGS event – thank you to everyone who supported this initiative, and to Mona and volunteer Melanie, who offered their homes as drop-off locations for goods.
On August 23, we held another of our popular clothing giveaway events in conjunction with Calgary Evergreen Community Association. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped out on a very hot day, and to everyone who cleaned out their closets and donated clothing items. Another clothing giveaway is planned for February or March of next year so watch our socials and our website for more information!
Another big thank you to everyone who donated school supplies during our School Supply Drive in August! Your donations were distributed by Trellis Society and will make a difference to in-need students at Centennial High School, as well as families in our south Calgary communities.
We were thrilled to present our first-ever Music in the Park event on August 30. The event was free for everyone to attend, and we were fortunate to have award-winning country music singer Mya Kate perform. More Music in the Park events are planned for 2026 – stay “tuned”!
Save the date for a Repair Exchange event happening on Saturday, November 1! More details to follow.
