Celebrate Community Awareness Month with SBHCA
by Shelly Smith
March is the month in which 156 Community Associations across Calgary, including SBHCA (Springbank Hill Community Association), celebrate Community Association Awareness Month. Calgary’s 156 Community Associations represent over 250 neighbourhoods.
SBHCA’s mission is to be a respected and successful volunteer organization that advocates, communicates, and provides value to all the residents within Springbank Hill. We perform our work through a number of committees and initiatives.
Specifically, for Springbank Hill, we celebrate the work done by SBHCA board members and volunteers, including:
• Serving all of Springbank Hill, which is one of the largest land masses of any CA in southwest Calgary.
• Serving over 5,000 homes. In 2020 that number was 3,800.
• Our board members and volunteers donated over 1,400 hours of their time in 2025 to make Springbank Hill a great place to live.
• Our Planning and Development team spent countless hours working with the City of Calgary and developers seeking to implement the Springbank Hill Area Structure Plan in the face of recent policy changes. The changes mean more density, more traffic, less parking and effects on safety and liveability. The team is sometimes able to obtain concessions during the land use amendment and development permit stages. Sometimes the concessions are not that extensive and over time our neighbourhood will see inevitable growth and changes that are also taking place in the rest of our City.
• Being very active in civic engagement, including advocating for the traffic calming measures on our streets and Stoney Trail noise reduction.
• Our volunteers managing our Springbank and Montreux outdoor ice rinks throughout the winter season, including making and cleaning ice in the early mornings and late evenings.
• Our Community Garden team managing one the most beautiful and well managed gardens in the City of Calgary.
• Hosting numerous events for community enjoyment and engagement, including Pumpkin Festival, Community Cleanup (in partnership with Signal Hill and Discovery Ridge CAs), adult events, Chinese New Year, and meet and greet with John Pantazopoulos.
• We hear you. In the fall of 2025, we published the results of the Springbank Hill residents survey results (see infographic in this article) and are actively working on your feedback.
