For those who may not know, our councillor Richard Pootmans retired from city council this past November. As there is an election coming up in the fall, there has been no need for a by-election, instead Ward 6 will be looked after by other councillors until a new representative is elected in the fall.
Councillor Sonya Sharp is the current representative for Springbank Hill for the rest of the term. We have some information about her provided by her office for those wishing to become a bit more familiar with her while she is representing us on council for the next few months:
“Councillor Sonya Sharp was elected in 2021 to represent Ward 1 and is known for her strong advocacy on affordability, responsible development, and public safety. With experience in both business and municipal government, she brings a practical, results-driven approach to City Council. Before running for office, she worked at the City of Calgary, helping businesses navigate regulations, and also owned a small business, giving her firsthand knowledge of the challenges Calgarians face.
She is committed to ensuring tax dollars are spent wisely, cutting red tape, and making Calgary a place where families and businesses can succeed. In addition to her work in Ward 1, she is currently representing parts of Ward 6, including Springbank Hill, to ensure residents continue to have strong representation at City Hall. She looks forward to engaging with the community and working on the issues that matter most to residents.”
In terms of communication, the best place to get information about Ward 6 affairs is still the Ward 6 newsletter, emails can be sent to the Ward 6 office as well as Sonya Sharp while she is representing our neighbourhood. Both the newsletter signup page and councillor contact forms can be found on the City of Calgary website here: https://www.calgary.ca/council/ward-6/contact-ward-6.html.
