November 1st marked the first major snowfall in Calgary and it became very clear that autumn was behind us and we were settling in for the winter season. November always begins with a solemn tone as we prepare ourselves for Remembrance Day. Every year we collect money for veterans and our “Hats on for Veterans” fundraiser was very well received in the school community. Students and staff members donated to our veteran’s fund – and wore a hat for the day in addition to donating to the poppy fund.

The end of November is where students received their first progress report for the 2017-2018 school year and our Wrestling team competed at City Finals.

However, December has arrived and with it comes some wonderful opportunities for parents, staff and relatives to enjoy the many concerts, Christmas markets and holiday performances of the season. The first Sunday of Advent is December 3rd. Classes will be setting out Advent wreaths and candles and discussing the importance of the Advent Season. Advent also marks a time of social justice and giving. We know that there are many charities and organizations asking for help, especially at this time of the year. We are very proud that this year St. Augustine school working with St. Anthony’s Parish to prepare Christmas hampers. This has been a tradition of St. Anthony’s Parish for many years, and these hampers benefit many families and other members of the community.

Preparations for Our Advent Celebration are also well underway, and we are pleased to be hosted by the Boyce Theatre on Wednesday, December 13th. Our theme for this year’s production is Christmas Around the World and features artwork and performances that reflect the many beliefs and traditions of several different cultures.

With so much going on this month, it is important that we are careful not to get all caught up in the hustle and bustle of the festive season. We need to ensure that we don’t get so wrapped up in the preparation that we don’t truly appreciate Christmas when it finally arrives. Please be certain to take a moment to slow down and appreciate those closest to you.

On behalf of the St. Augustine Fine Arts School community we would like to wish everyone a safe and holy holiday.
