On June 8th, 2 Guide units, 1 Pathfinder unit and 1 Ranger unit all went kayaking on the Glenmore Resevoir by Heritage Park. We had a lot of girls attend so we were split up into a morning and afternoon group.

The weather was a little cold in the morning, warmed up during the day and then a thunderstorm rolled in for the early evening, typical Calgary weather. The girls all came prepared for the conditions, including some hot chocolate for afterwards, because that’s how Girl Guides roll.

Our outfitters and instructors for the day were from Aquabatics, and they were a wonderful group of people. They provided us with the kayaks, paddles, water shirts and PFDs and three hours of instruction. There were a lot of girls who had never been kayaking before, including myself, so there was some giddy excitement to start each session. After we launched into the water, straight in from the hillside, the girls had a lot of fun learning the strokes and how to control their kayak. We planned games, took a trip further out on the Glenmore, waved at the S.S. Moyie and said goodbye to our kayaks by touching our nose to the tip of the boat, while still on the water.

It was a wonderful adventure and a great way to end the Guiding year. It’s fantastic being a Girl Guide leader because I get to do all these adventures while making life long friendships and helping to mentor the next generation of incredible young women.
