Bankview: A Historical Gem in SW Calgary
Bankview, one of Calgary’s oldest communities, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1908. Residents of Bankview enjoy proximity to the vibrant 17th Avenue SW and the unique charm of this historic neighbourhood. Bankview also enjoys panoramic views of Calgary’s downtown skyline, making it a distinctive neighbourhood.
In 1882 English immigrant William Nimmons purchased land for ranching and farming, laying the foundation for Bankview’s development. The city later acquired the land and started residential development in the 1900s.
While no schools are situated directly within Bankview, nearby educational institutions such as Calgary Arts Academy, Scarboro Community Preschool, Connaught School, and Western Canada High School offer educational opportunities.

Bankview proudly houses the Bankview Community Association, dedicated to enhancing residents’ lives through engagement, safety, and support. With committees focused on planning and development, as well as traffic and safety, the Association plays a pivotal role in community well-being. The Bankview Community Centre is adorned with a colourful mural and offers rental spaces like a boardroom and hall. Outside, residents can enjoy tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, a vast green space, and community garden plots.
Bankview Community Demographics
According to the City of Calgary’s 2021 Census, Bankview is home to 5,125 residents in private households. A significant 69% of the population aged 15 years and older hold a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree. Bankview features a relatively youthful demographic, with 84% falling within the 15 to 64 age bracket.
Bankview’s median total household income stands at $57,600 before tax. In terms of housing, 28% of households are owner-occupied, while 71% choose renting. The majority of dwellings are apartments in buildings with less than five storeys (69%).
The community embraces diversity, with immigrants constituting 24% of the private household population. Bankview’s immigrants primarily originate from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Additionally, 410 residents in Bankview identify with indigenous heritage, representing First Nations, Métis, and Inuk Indigenous groups. The Bankview Community Association acknowledges its presence on the traditional land of Treaty 7, which includes the Siksika, Piikani, Kainai, Tsuut’ina, Îyârhe Nakoda First Nations, Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nation, along with the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.
