Spring has officially arrived! A peek ahead in the forecast tells me that it will be a slow warm up but that is, in fact, beneficial for our gardens – plants will use this cooler weather to develop hearty root systems, which almost always results in an exuberant flowering. It is taking a bit of extra patience for me to not plant in my greenhouse before nighttime temperatures are consistently above zero. For now, my seedlings have overtaken every windowsill and the kitchen table – patience, patience, patience Maureen.
We were fortunate to have our first event of the year on Family Day. The SCA Winter Festival was well attended and marks the beginning of the relaxation of COVID restrictions – fingers crossed that continues. Thank you to all the sponsors that made this event possible and a special thank you to all the volunteers that came back to support the SCA (Dexter you were a great help and good company in the kitchen!).
On Wednesday, May 11 at 7:00 pm, the SCA will be holding it’s first ‘in person’ AGM in over two years. This meeting reviews the past year, tables the audited 2021 financial statements, elects the Board of Directors, and provides a glimpse at future plans. All residents are invited to attend and if you are a member in good standing (paid your membership fee) of the community association, your vote counts.
The SCA Casino is on May 21 and 22 and we are in desperate need of volunteers. Casino funds cover all the utility bills. COVID has been hard on the bottom line and the SCA is grateful to be back in the casino rotation; we would really appreciate your support by volunteering for a shift. The SCA’s next event is the community Parade of Garage Sales on Saturday, May 28. Register with the SCA office and they will include you on a map for shoppers and handle all the advertising – you set up at your own home and the shoppers will find you. The SCA also has an upcoming senior’s dance on June 24 in partnership with Amica Aspen Woods, and in the summer on July 23 we have a recycling/garbage day planned – volunteers required for this event as well.
We just completed our audit for the 2021 financial year and although it has been tough, we emerge from COVID in a healthy financial position due to the support of the City of Calgary and Federal Government’s COVID relief funding, the support of staff, and a dedicated group that have volunteered for the SCA’s Board of Directors and reinvigorated the SCA’s vision.
In addition to the information available on the SCA website, www.scacalgary.ca, on spring events and programming, summer programming and camps are also available – time to start planning activities for summer!
As spring begins to melt the snow in the city and mountains, our storm water ponds begin to fill and can be hazardous to children and pets. Check out the City of Calgary’s website for more information on storm pond safety and other resident concerns.
