Homeowners’ Associations, Residents’ Associations, and Community Associations: What’s the Difference?

We often get questions about the difference between HOAs, community associations, and residents’ associations, and we want to help clarify what that means to Coach Hill and Patterson Heights.

With an RA or HOA, you are usually contributing funds for maintenance and beautification of an area. There is a residents’ association in Patterson Heights composed of residents living along Patterson Boulevard that has been operating for more than 20 years. The mandatory annual fee is about $90, added onto their property taxes and used to maintain the boulevard grass and fill the planter boxes along Patterson Boulevard. If you have questions about the Patterson Heights Residents’ Association, you can contact them at [email protected].

The Coach Hill/Patterson Heights Community Association is a little bit different. We represent both communities in advocating for improvements for our community with the City. We liaise with our Ward 6 councillor, identify traffic and safety issues, communicate city missives and important messages to our members and residents, and engage in housing development projects in our communities. We also run programs and events and are currently working on an infrastructure project, the Outdoor Activity Hub. Membership is optional, unlike the HOA/RA, and is only $20 per household per year. We use these funds for putting on events, such as the Stampede Breakfast and Movie in the Park, and for operational expenses such as insurance, auditing, and bookkeeping services.
