Garry and I went to the Open House on February 6 at the Acadia Rec Center to learn more about the Heritage Area Plan. There were six tables, each with two or three city planners who were very willing to explain what was depicted on the maps. There was one for bike paths, one for walking paths- showing what exists, what will exist, and most likely what may never exist.
There was a map with what amenities exist now- including schools, halls, playgrounds, shopping areas, and green spaces.
At each table there were sticky notes to say what you like and don’t like… a process which has happened many times over the last few years. There was good representation from Eagle Ridge who do not want infills, high rises, condos, or any high-density residences – perhaps you think the same for Haysboro.
We went there to get more information about the old YMCA lot on Heritage and Haddon Rd.
As we looked at the maps, we saw it designated as flex neighbourhood – which means if you have a good plan for a 4 to 12 storey building that includes main floor exterior entrances for a café, store, daycare, or other amenity, then you meet the criteria. Fortunately, through the development permit process– there is the opportunity for the community to comment and bring up any concerns before anything gets built.
One thing that was evident was lack of parking in some of these higher density areas. Which is understandable because the city is looking at Transit Oriented Development, cycling, and walking – but what they forget is that people like their vehicles. Case in point, Acadia; it has the Rec Centre with arena and 10 curling sheets, and meeting rooms. Across the street there is the Tennis Centre, and a high school – attend any activities at any of those places and you are fighting for a parking spot because you don’t walk, or bike, or take the bus (unless you have no choice) to curling, or hockey.
I think it was very interesting to see Haysboro through the eyes of planners, but it also reminded me that change is going to happen whether I like it or not. The question is – will I just let it happen or will I help it happen? Only by helping can we have the community we would like to see.
