Welcome Back!

by Shannon Cook, Chair, CCSD Board of Trustees

My name is Shannon Cook and I am honoured to have been re-elected as the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) Board Chair for the 2024-2025 school year. I am the trustee for Wards 9, 10, Chestermere, and online learning, and I have proudly served on the board since 2021. I look forward to continuing to serve the Calgary Catholic community along with Trustee Lory Iovinelli, who was also recently re-elected as Vice Chair and has served on the board since 2017. Trustee Iovinelli is the elected trustee for Wards 6 and 8, but also serves schools in wards 4, 7, 11, and 12, as well as specialized programs. On behalf of the CCSD Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome students and staff to a new school year. Calgary Catholic staff is looking forward to continuing to make our schools and work sites positive, safe, and caring environments where all are welcome, respected, and belong.

Parent and Trustee Forums

Trustees are accountable to the constituents in the wards they serve. As elected officials, they are accountable to the community and are responsible for setting the direction of the school district through governance. Our trustees, guided by the board’s four priorities, ensure students receive an education permeated by our Catholic faith and advocate for Catholic education locally, provincially, and nationally. One of the ways our district helps facilitate effective trustee relationships between home, school, and community is through our Parent and Trustee Forums. These forums are an opportunity to meet the board, Chief Superintendent and senior admin, participate in discussions, and be informed about important matters. For the 2024-2025 school year, CCSD will host three Parent and Trustee Forums in-person with the first one taking place on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at St. Francis High School. This forum is the Executive Orientation/General Meeting, designed to provide an overview of school council. We hope you will join us at these important events, and we look forward to meeting those we serve. For more information, please visit cssd.ab.ca/school-council.

Additional Funding to Address Growing Enrolment

On July 23, 2024, the Government of Alberta announced additional operational funding and modular classrooms to address rising K-12 enrolment in schools across the province and to enable school districts to alleviate increased operational pressures. As a result, Calgary Catholic will receive up to 14 new modular classrooms and will have up to six relocated, as well as receive additional operational funding. We are thankful to the Government of Alberta for the support to help address the ongoing pressures of enrolment growth. Planning is underway to determine next steps and how to best utilize the funds/modular classrooms to support the diverse needs of our students. On behalf of the board, we wish students and staff a safe, memorable, and productive 2024-2025 school year.
