Fall Traffic Safety Enforcement Focuses on Back to School
As children head back to school this fall, there will be an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic on our roads, especially near schools. In the Marda Loop Communities we have eight schools at the elementary, junior high, and high school level so a lot of traffic with vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians commuting to and from school.
Constable Art Szabo, the District 2 Community Resource Officer with Calgary Police reminds all drivers and pedestrians to stay safe and take your time. Here are some fines for traffic offences in playground zones.
At a Glance: Fines for Traffic Offences in Playground Zones
• Passing in a playground zone: $243
• U-turn in a school zone: $162
• Fail to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk: $810
• Parking within five metres of a crosswalk: $81
• Jaywalking: $81
Quick Facts from The Government of Alberta:
• The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is $567 and six demerit points.
• You are not permitted to pass or attempt to pass another vehicle travelling in the same direction within a playground zone, when the zone is in effect.
• The speed limit for both urban and rural school zones is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted.
• The vast majority (about 90 per cent) of collisions involving school buses occur in urban areas. (from Calgary Police).

34 Avenue SW Multiuse Pathway (MUP) Project
The project involves replacing the existing concrete sidewalk with a new multiuse pathway along 34 Avenue SW, between 17 Street and 14 Street. It will connect to the existing path on the south side of 34 Avenue, constructed as part of the Marda Loop Main Streets project. Contact us via the project email at [email protected].
