It is official. MCA will once again have a group of storytelling, picture sharing mentors purposely piecing together the history of our amazing community! We are starting up in January, casual coffee chats to begin, hopefully “we” will be a good mix of the “we were there” and the just plain inquisitive, and (I hope) a sprinkling of the young and energetic, too. A wonderful group of people put together the “Montgomery Memories” publication a few years back, it’s time for volume two! Please let me know if you are interested!

Support the venues that support live music. Yes, we lost another one mid-November. I spent a few (hundred) hours within the walls of Mikeys in Bowness, know the owner, family, and staff. I was saddened to see it not be able to hang on, for various and many reasons in our troubled times. But the biggest reason is us. We didn’t show up, to buy a Guiness or a vino or a mango juice. We didn’t put a ten spot into the musician’s tip jar. We didn’t order the brisket poutine or veggie quesadillas. We didn’t invite our friends to join us to do the same. It’s easier to hear your own playlist in your own casa. Get it. The beverages and munchies are cheaper and sometimes better at home. Fully understood. But to support creativity, to allow artisans of new sounds, rhythms and word salads to fly free and flourish, we need to support the spaces that set up a corner for aural artists to share their wares with us.

I will purposefully build a list of live music venues for the January Messenger, and I would really appreciate you sharing your fave places to hear some live music with me. In the meantime, in this festive time of year, get out there and purposely pick the venues that do support Calgary’s live musicians! Thank you! The very best of the season to you all!
