Oh, What Fun It Is to Be an MLCA Senior!
If you were not in the Christmas spirit when you joined the Marda Loop seniors’ gathering on December 1, you certainly were by the time it was over. It was a festive morning of fun and games, joyous music, random prize draws, and scrumptious food.
Megan, our recreation specialist substituted several fun-loving games for the “brave of heart” in place of her usual exercise session. In spite of the “fierce team competition” there were no losers because the “Pass the Present” finale ensured all participants received a gift, some of which were exchanged with a friend fostering positive feelings of camaraderie.
Treasured Christmas music was provided by the Balzac Kitchen Party String Band, a versatile band who led our sing-alongs and highlighted vocal, whistle, and banjo solos. Their music evoked feelings of warmth, togetherness, and joy amongst us, perfectly capturing the spirit of the season.
Each table, covered in red and gold, was anchored by a unique Christmas themed centrepiece assembled by committee members. A special thanks to Chester Kelloway, a long time Marda Loop senior pickleball player for fashioning the centrepiece bases from an old tree trunk—a remarkable example of reuse/recycling. Ten lucky participants won the draw to take one of these centrepieces home.
The potluck did not disappoint with a full spread of appetizers, mains, and desserts galore. Many of us with a sweet tooth sampled a dessert with our coffee prior to the entertainment and again after the main course—a sumptuous indulgent.
We are fortunate to belong to the Marda Loop seniors’ group. On behalf of all participants, thank you to the local merchants who donated prizes and especially to Heather Bhatty and her committee for organizing this merry event.

MLCA Seniors Go ‘Pong’ ‘Sheung’ ‘Kong’ – Let’s Play Mahjong!
The MLCA Senior Mahjongers were formed on November 7 under my guidance and with the assistance of my two mahjong students, Delle Waddell and Mary Judge.
Every Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, the Mahjongers meet to play, make thunderous noises, challenge their brains, have loads of laughs and fun within four great walls of mahjong tiles. Winners get no money but plenty of kudos, candies, and/or cookies.
The enthusiasm and warm camaraderie of those Mahjongers are contagious – they show up rain, snow/sleet or shine; it is most impressive. My mother, from whom I learnt how to play the game, would definitely be cheering from above.
Those who are still having second thoughts, come and give mahjong a try. All are welcome, no experience required. Please let Heather ([email protected]) know if you would like to attend. We are playing Hong Kong-style Mahjong.
One of the best ways to heat up a wintry afternoon and be connected socially is via the Battles of Mahjong.
See you all there!
