There’s nothing like the sound of a lawnmower to indicate the change of season! As we transition to summer, leaving grass clippings on the lawn is one way to make this seasonal practice easier for you and beneficial for your lawn.

Leaving grass clippings on the lawn, otherwise known as grass mulching, is the natural way of breaking down grass. Grass clippings are about 80 to 85% water and quickly break down, returning nutrients and moisture to the soil. Leaving clippings on the lawn can actually produce a healthier looking lawn.

Try these tips for how to leave grass clippings on the lawn:

  • Cut when the surface is dry
  • Keep mower blades sharp
  • Follow the 1/3 rule: mow your lawn often enough that no more than 1/3 of your grass is cut.

You may need to raise the height of your mower.

You can use any mower: push, electric or gas. Using your existing mower, remove the bag and leave the clippings on the lawn.
