Reports of Council at Odds Overblown

Dear Friends,

Let me begin by directly addressing reports that City Council is struggling to get along. I think that these concerns are overblown. Everyone here is trying to do a great job. We are finding our way and learning to work together. My concern at City Council, however, is culture and “groupthink” that can happen in any large organization. Newcomers should be allowed to speak publicly about new ideas or bring up topics that challenge the status quo.

I am committed to treating others with respect regardless of the circumstances. I acknowledge my commitment to a new way of doing things – such as asking for the record to show who was present or how Council voted on an issue – sometimes result in tension. I strongly believe that open and respectful debate is healthy and can only be a good thing for taxpayers.

As we welcome warmer weather, Ward 11 will be one of the busiest areas in the city in terms of major infrastructure projects and developments. You will undoubtedly be impacted by a significant number of road closures, detours, traffic delays and construction noise over the coming months. I have been working hard to ensure that City departments are coordinating these projects and sharing important information with you. As I am inheriting decisions made before my time, I am working hard to coordinate these efforts, reduce their negative impacts, and bring your concerns to City Administration.

As always, I am committed to ensuring that your voice is heard and that you are getting value for money. Together we are slowly starting to change the culture at City Hall!

I hope to see you at our next Ward 11 Town Hall taking place on March 15th (7-8:30pm) at the Parkhill Stanley Park Community Hall – 4014 Stanley Road SW!

Respectfully yours,

Jeromy

(Ward 11 Councillor and Palliser resident)
