June is upon us and soon we will celebrate the longest day of the year. I know that many of us are planning a glorious summer of outdoor fun and adventure. One summer stop for my family will be a visit to the pandas at the Calgary Zoo. The pandas are more than just a cute tourist attraction bringing thousands of visitors to Calgary. The pandas represent many years of establishing a relationship of trust with China’s people and government, and I am proud to have been involved. Trust is key to all relationships and we all must work hard to earn the partnerships, friendships and community spirit that come from our sincere commitment to others.
In my last newsletter, I mentioned my Private Members Bill abolishing Adverse Possession. Behind the scenes I have also been working on increasing awareness among small businesses of the recent changes to the Labour and Employment standards. I worked closely with industry and advocated tirelessly to encourage government to do more consultation prior to passing the Bill. Unfortunately, they felt that 30 days of online surveys was sufficient, and the legislation was passed. The result has been thousands of small businesses not having the resources nor latitude to ensure sustainability and compliance. A strong business sector and compassionate social services are mutually dependent upon one another.
While I am energized by representing you in the Legislature, session will gratefully end on June 14th. Calgary is my home, and after 26 years in #YYCFishCreek I am looking forward to spending time with you, my “bosses”. So please say hello when you see me in the community or at your doors, where I seek the opinions that matter to me and guide my humble representation.
