This past November, the President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance, Travis Toews, announced the Q2 fiscal update for the 2022-23 fiscal year. Alberta’s government is creating a strong path forward towards continued economic growth by paying down debt, saving for the future, and supporting Albertans through the inflation crisis.
Your government continues to build a prosperous economic future for Albertans with an unrelenting focus on fiscal responsibility, job creation, and economic diversification. The strong mid-year results show that Alberta remains well-positioned to weather economic headwinds. Alberta continues to have economic momentum – despite global uncertainty – with a projected surplus of $12.3 billion and debt repayment of $13.3 billion.
Alberta is leading the country in job creation. Our province is responsible for more than one-quarter of the new jobs created in Canada this year, as job creators rush here to set up shop and provide meaningful work and lasting careers to tens of thousands more Albertans. Alberta is also leading the country in interprovincial migration and population growth as we attract people from around the world who want the opportunities Alberta provides. Alberta’s economy is becoming more diverse, as companies in sectors such as aviation, technology, finance, film and television, and other emerging industries choose to invest in our province.
Alberta’s economy has strongly recovered, but Albertans are struggling to heat their homes and feed their families and we want to help. We have already committed $2.8 billion over three years ($2.4 billion over two years) to help Albertans with the cost-of-living concerns and are committing $1.3 billion in new funding to help make life more affordable.
