Dear Brentwoodians,
Halloween has just passed, and as both a parent and a candy enthusiast I was gratified to see herds of children going door-to-door in Brentwood on a chilly Sunday evening while their parents waited out on the sidewalk. It seemed like a sign that just maybe things are getting back to normal in our world.
By the time you read this it will be December, and thoughts will be starting to take on the red-and-green tint of the holidays. No matter your culture, this is a time for us to (finally) gather with family and celebrate the passing of another year while bringing light to the dark midwinter—but as Cam Howey and the Brentwood Cares team remind us in this issue, it can also be a time of need for many in our community and beyond. I encourage you all to read his article and consider some of the suggestions he makes for helping those in need, over the holidays and year-round.
A Note on Politics
Given that we are just settling in with a new mayor and (mostly) new city council, and have just come through a federal election, it might be worth clarifying some of the rules and relationships between the BCA, the Bugle, and our elected representatives.
The controversy surrounding the municipal election in Ward 4 has naturally provoked many opinions, but city councillors remain the primary contact for communities and individuals with the city government, and the community association needs to maintain open communication with Councillor Chu on development and transportation and other issues.
The Bugle’s content is to some degree governed by our publishers, Great News Media, who also publish newsletters for many other Calgary communities. We are prohibited from publishing articles supporting candidates or political parties; however, we are free to report on activities carried out by our elected representatives if they are noteworthy or particularly relevant to our community. We do receive updates from constituency offices for publication, but like all articles submitted to the Bugle, publication of these is subject to space and editorial discretion—which includes refusing material which is overtly partisan in nature and does not meet the publisher’s guidelines. The only way for a politician to guarantee publication is to purchase advertising space, which some do.
Photo Contest
The Bugle is looking for Brentwood’s best amateur photographers to provide cover images each month. If you have a great snap of our neighbourhood saved on your phone or posted on your social media feed, send it in for a chance to be featured on the cover of an upcoming issue! Photos must be 300 DPI or higher (i.e., from a newer model phone or good digital camera), 2400 x 1600 pixels minimum size, and portrait orientation. If submitting pictures of minors, please make sure that you have direct, express permission to submit the picture from a parent or guardian. Send your photos, or any questions, to [email protected].
Yours sincerely,
Jonathan Jucker, Editor
