Brentwood’s Editor’s Scribblings for April

Dear Brentwoodians,

In this issue our neighbourhood reporter Lee Hunt celebrates the 55th anniversary of the Bugle (I promise I didn’t put her up to it!). I am proud to be part of this long tradition of keeping our community connected and informed.

Lee found a copy of the March 1970 newsletter, whose cover is featured once again this month. This sketch of a very traditional family feels a little bit “retro” now, and I am glad that Brentwood has become a very diverse neighbourhood in every regard. It would be great if the writing in the Bugle could better reflect this diversity, so I would like to encourage people to share their voices and submit opinion or local interest pieces for publication. There is no need to commit to a monthly column (although that would be great too), and if you are nervous about your writing skills – well part of my job is to help with that! Reach out at the email below if you are interested.

Speaking of getting involved, I will echo Melanie Swailes’s appeal for volunteers to join the Development and Transportation Committee. Now more than ever we need people for this important role in our community.

Churchill Reunion

In another throwback to the ‘70s, Dennis Taylor has asked me to include a notification about the Sir Winston Churchill High School Class of 1975 50th Reunion event. Dennis says it will be very informal, and you can contact him at 403-512-6533 or [email protected] for information. Keep on truckin’, class of 75!

Support Local

As I write, a trade war has erupted, with our neighbour to the south putting tariffs on Canadian goods and reprisals from Ottawa. Given the mercurial nature of US leadership, this may have blown over by the time the April issue lands in your mailbox, but it is nevertheless a good reminder to support Canadian and especially local businesses. And remember, even if a store or restaurant has a multi-national brand, they are still likely to be owned by Canadians and employ local workers. There are plenty of websites and apps that will help you research this if you want.

Casino

Finally, a continuing reminder about the upcoming charity casino at the Elbow River Casino May 3 and 4 (see poster in this issue). Please sign up and support the BCA!
