Falls Lake, Nova Scotia: July 5, 2022

Dear Brentwoodians,

Being originally from central Canada, I miss the close proximity of thousands of lakes, ranging from little more than a pond to the inland seas of the Great Lakes; some full of people having fun, and some offering peace and serenity. Cottages on Ontario lakes can range from cabins with outdoor toilets to luxury mansions with seaplane hangars, with many options in between for renting or sharing a special family getaway.

It’s a bit harder to experience this in southern Alberta – lakes are few and far between (even counting the BC interior) and consequently busier and costlier to rent or own. Other lakes are glacier-fed in our mountains, affording only the bravest the opportunity to dive in on a hot day. This is all a roundabout way of saying that I am currently enjoying a family stay at a lovely lakeside cottage in central Nova Scotia, so I won’t be writing much more this month!

Instead, I will turn some space over to Brentwood’s new community resource officer with Calgary Police Servicer, Constable Margaret Reinders:

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Constable Margaret Reinders, and I am the new Community Resource Officer for District 3, Zone 4. I have been a police officer for almost 33 years, first in Holland and since 2006, in Canada with CPS. I have worked in traffic, the police training centre, and since 2018, on patrol in district 3. My priorities are the C-train stations (Brentwood and Lions Park), and the social disorder that comes from drug use and the transient populations that use the C-train.

The last few years have been hard for all of us, and the current economic climate is making everything even worse. Due to supply chain issues, bicycles and (second hand) cars are hard to find, and bicycle thefts and car thefts are rising quickly. To prevent break and enters, do the 9 PM routine: close doors and windows, especially on the first floor. Check car doors, remove valuables, and ensure that garage-door openers are not in full sight. Make sure gates and garage man doors are closed and there are no ladders outside, or other materials that people can use to reach the second floor. Please write down serial numbers for bikes, strollers, and chariots, and keep receipts. Often police do find bikes that we believe are stolen, but without this information we can’t prove it, or locate the rightful owner.

Looking forward to working with you all,

Cst. Margaret Reinders
