On the Edge of Winter Explores Our “Special Season”

by Brenda Erskine, CHCA Mini Galleries

Spring begins officially on March 20, but Calgarians can’t be fooled. The mini galleries in Rotary Park share twelve local poets’ personal perspectives of this in-between season in “The Edge of Winter”, a collection of visual poetry and art curated by the Alexandra Writers Centre Society.

In March, Moni Brar’s bright petals spoke of the Search for the Miraculous. Kim Firmston’s On the Razor’s Edge burst with colour, eager to transform our bleak winter landscape. Kelly Kaur and Josephine LoRe celebrated the fun of these warmer winter months, with memories of snowmen and skating parties. Liza Louise’s For Now captured the silent beauty and patience of waiting for spring’s renewal, while Lucia Semenoff’s fabric art spoke to the power and energy of the Bow River in winter. If you missed these beautiful pieces, and the art walk on March 18, look for the photos @chcayyc on Instagram or Facebook.

Six new works will be added to the exhibition in early April, replacing the pieces above. Will Scott Pieschel, Aolo da Osta, Nancy Toombs, Kimberly Ihekwoaba, Cynthia Roebuck, and Alisa Hartley bring us closer to spring, or will we still be teetering on the edge? Join us at the art walk in Rotary Park on April 15 and share your thoughts.
