Here it is March already and the end of the first quarter of 2023. Where does the time go? The board is winding up the business of 2022 and getting ready for the annual audit. We are looking at our board complement and taking a head count for which directors have completed their terms of office and those who are mid-term. We will have a number of vacancies and will be looking to ECA members to step up. Serving on the board need not be an onerous task and there are benefits. Directors help shape the community, interact with City representatives and other local decision makers. You meet your neighbours and form new friendships. Our board elections will take place at our Annual General Meeting in May. Watch for additional details. If you have an interest in joining the board, please reach out to Scott Thompson, Rick Wierzbecki, or me, and we can send along the nomination forms or simply have a chat about board duties and responsibilities. Consider renewing or taking out an ECA membership so you can fully participate in the association. Membership can be paid online at the ECA website.

If you have been by the Edgemont Community Centre lately you will see that Phase 1 of the renovation project is complete and we’re on to Phase 2. This means new funding applications, updated scope of work descriptions, and meetings and more meetings. The Building Administration Committee under the chairmanship of Elaine Scobie has done outstanding work in guiding this project. We are also grateful to Jason Moros from the Three Peaks Group who has been our project manager. It’s hard to imagine volunteers taking on a project of this magnitude without some professional support.

As I write this article, Calgary has just come through a winter’s blast. Thanks to Councillor Chu’s office for sending along a reminder of residents’ obligations for snow removal. Residents and businesses have 24 hours to clear ice and snow from their properties’ adjacent sidewalks or risk a $250 fine for a first offence. Uncleared sidewalks can be reported to 311. It is helpful to include the specific location of the problem as well as a photo. If you are a resident for whom clearing the snow poses a problem, take advantage of the Snow Angel program by contacting Jeff Edwards. If you are handy with a shovel, let Jeff know and your name will be added to his roster of angels. Jeff can be reached at [email protected].

Upcoming activities include the Lego Competition on April 22, Spring Handicraft Market on May 6, and the Mothers’ Day Tea on May 13. We also have a Casino Night fundraiser taking place April 25 and 26. While we have day shifts full, we are in need of the night owls to help with shifts between 6:30 pm and 3:30 am. Check our website, www.Edgemont.ab.ca, for details. Information will be posted about how to get involved with Lego and Casino Night, how to become a vendor at the market, and ticket purchases for the tea.
