We have come to the end of our 2025 season at the Garden. The potato harvest on Saturday, September 20 was a huge success (see cover photo). 143 pounds of potatoes were collected by 22 volunteers and donated to the Calgary Food Bank as part of the Grow-A-Row initiative! This adds to the 150 pounds of carrots, beets, and zucchini already harvested and donated by our Garden Committee. Immense thanks to the Garden Committee and Friends of the Garden volunteers. We hope to recruit more committee members and volunteers next year.
A huge thank you to approximately 40 amazing volunteers who have joined our litter walks this summer and autumn. Together, we’ve collected 54 bags of garbage, making our parks, streets, and pathways cleaner and more welcoming for everyone. We encourage everyone to do their part, even picking up a couple of pieces of litter on your daily walk makes a difference. Every small action adds up!
Thank you to those who responded to our survey regarding the paving of the skating area at the Community Park. We received excellent feedback from you and decided not to pursue a grant for this project this year. Based on the survey, we can look at focusing on smaller projects such as trees, seating, signage, community art, and other endeavours that will benefit Evanston and still make the Community Park a desirable place to be. The Board has also decided not to flood the area this season for a skating rink. The cost to do so is very high each year and the finicky weather can ruin the ice in only a matter of hours.
A Community Town Hall with the Calgary Police Service’s executive leadership team provided some insight into the increase in youth crime city-wide. Evanston is a community full of youth and the ECCA may need to be a catalyst for bringing families, schools, and businesses together to provide opportunities for our young people so that they are not engaging in anti-social behaviours.
