One of the Lifetime Members of the Highland Park Community Association, Sandy Handy, passed away on April 6, 2024, at the age of 85. For those who knew her, she was a smart lady, with a wry sense of humour, who was an incredibly dedicated volunteer with the community, and our local elementary, Buchanan School.

She was born and raised in Calgary, trained as a nurse at the General Hospital, and moved with her family to Highland Park in 1967. Almost immediately she became involved with the community association and with Buchanan School, which her own children, and eventually her grandson, attended. Even after her grandson graduated from Buchanan, she remained involved with its Parent Association as the liaison for the HPCA Board. Over the years she served in pretty much every role on the HPCA Board and was also involved in efforts to keep Buchanan open when enrolment had declined, as well as efforts to “Save Nose Hill,” both of which were successful. To honour Sandy, HPCA will be giving a donation to the Buchanan School Breakfast Program.
