At the heart of Highland Park, a collaboration between the Highland Park Community Association and Fresh Start Recovery has been crafting something extraordinary for the past eight years. Each month, we come together to host a luncheon that is more than just a meal. It’s a joining of community, a bridge of connection, and a heartfelt bond. This partnership serves as a reminder of the incredible support, connection, and familiarity found through communal efforts and the impact they can have.

Fresh Start Recovery understands the importance of connection. We support and create new beginnings every day, reflecting the journey of recovery seen in every individual completing our recovery program. Our luncheons offer a space of inclusion, unity, and healing, where every story and every struggle is met with empathy, acceptance, and understanding. In the community of Highland Park, we share more than meals; we share a familiar path, underscoring the belief that together, we can overcome many of the perceptions attached to the young and old.

Our kitchen manager, Scott, puts it beautifully: “In the kitchen, we find a unique way to connect and serve, blending the art of food with care and nutrition. It’s a calling for those of us in hospitality and culinary arts, driven by a nurturing desire to care deeply for others. Serving lunch at Highland Park goes beyond an honour – it’s our way of giving back and acknowledging the resilience and stories of our seniors, the unsung heroes of past generations. Their lives, rich in history and sacrifice, deserve recognition and a listening ear, reminding us of their invaluable contributions to our communities. Cooking for them is our small gesture of gratitude, supported by the invaluable efforts of our volunteers. This act of kindness, this monthly luncheon, is our tribute to their legacy, ensuring they feel remembered, valued, and part of a community that cherishes their presence.”

This opportunity captures the essence of community. Our luncheons go beyond mere sustenance; the ability to connect with the area seniors allows us to stitch together a fabric of shared moments, bonds, and support. Connection is essential to these events, infusing them with kindness, respect, and a feeling of community. The Seniors are more than luncheon guests; they’re the custodians of history and wisdom. Connecting with them is our privilege, as they remind us of the journeys that have shaped our today and tomorrow. We will strive to ensure that every senior feels seen and supported. At these luncheons, we’re not just offering a seat at a table for a meal but a place in a community that cares for one another.
