Preparing for spring in Calgary
While outdoor planting is still a few months away, there’s plenty you can do now:
1. Plan Your Garden
• Review last year’s successes and challenges
• Rotate crops to reduce pests and disease
• Order seeds early – popular varieties sell out fast
2. Start seeds indoors (soon!)
In Calgary, many gardeners start planting seeds indoors between March and April.
Good candidates include:
• Tomatoes
• Peppers
• Onions
• Herbs like basil and thyme
3. Check Your Tools
• Clean and sharpen tools
• Inventory stakes, cages, and trays
• Repair or replace broken items now
A Note on Soil and Snow
Please avoid working garden plots until the soil has fully thawed and dried. Walking or digging in wet soil can cause compaction that lasts all season.
Get Involved

Community gardens welcome all skill levels, we can grow fresh food, learn together, and make friends along the way. One small plot can grow confidence, connection, and joy. Here’s to another abundant and joyful growing season!
