Happy Mother’s Day!
I’m excited to let you know about several great events the SMCA has planned for the next few months. If you wish to volunteer for any of the events, send us an email at [email protected].
The SMCA is sponsoring yoga classes at the Berkshire Citadel Church on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 am. A series of 10 classes is being offered until June 18, for a $10 drop-in fee per class, and classes are free for SMCA Members. We will be there to sign up new members.
Mark your calendar for the community compost day on May 7, 2022. Big Man Landscaping will be delivering 12 yards of compost to the rink area. This is an extremely popular event and this year, those with a $20 SMCA membership can line up at 10:00 am to have access to the compost. All others will be able to access the compost after 10:30 am. Volunteers will be available to assist those who wish to purchase a membership and we are happy to discuss subsidizing a membership for you.
We are excited to announce free drop-in basketball lessons again this year for kids ages 11 to 13 at the hockey rink. The lessons will be starting April 25 and will run Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm (weather dependent).
The long-awaited community gardens will be built this spring at the back of the Berkshire Citadel Church property. Please let us know if you wish to rent a garden plot for the price of a $20 SMCA membership. We are only providing 10 garden spots this year so let us know soon. This is a several year project and we are looking for volunteers to help us beautify the area.
After a two-year hiatus, we are planning the Parade of Garage Sales on June 4 and 5 with the Beddington Heights Community Association. Please send us an email if you wish to register for this very popular event.
If you have any goods remaining from your garage sale, make sure you attend the Community Clean Up on June 12. The Women in Need Society (WINS) will be available to accept all donations.
Congratulations to our Treasurer, Sharon Mazurkewich, for being our ‘Volunteer of the Month’. Sharon moved to Sandstone with her husband, Darcy, in 1999. They raised three children here, who are now all in university. Their son and two daughters went to Monsignor Neville Anderson School in Sandstone and their daughters played MSB soccer. They have a barbet dog named Lucy who keeps Sharon and Darcy active with her twice daily walks. Sharon is an outdoor enthusiast, mainly for cross-country skiing, canoeing, and camping. She enjoys painting and took up curling at Huntington Hills a couple of years ago. We cannot thank Sharon enough for her tireless dedication towards managing the books and assisting with community activities.
