Hi everyone,
Bonavista Cares is so excited to be entering our fifth year of building community while helping our neighbours, families, and communities! Things are looking a little different this year – in September we gathered to try to come up with some great ideas follow all the safety protocols while also making sure we have fun giving back.
Over the summer, the Bonavista Cares Garden was an enormous success. We were able to donate over 150 pounds of fresh veggies so families in Calgary experiencing food insecurity had some nutritious deliciousness on their plates. It wasn’t an easy year for the leaders of the initiative, Madiha and Tanya, as with the COVID-19 restrictions a team of volunteers was difficult to come by. We are so grateful for their tireless energy and dedication to ensure the garden flourished as well as everyone who took a week volunteering to water. We are in the planning stages of how to engage more gardeners next year. It is such a fulfilling and fun way to help our neighbours and other communities that need a bit of extra help in these difficult times. We hope to see you next year at our garden!
Normally, every August, we come together to build backpacks for students in need upon return. The Backpack program was postponed by the Board to ensure safety of their students. We missed coming together but it inspired us to see how this year will look.
We have some great plans in the works, including but not limited to: Rhubarb, stocking up the Veterans Food Bank, our Christmas Sock program re-invented for this year with the hopes of returning fully the following year, our Birthday Bag program, and many more.
We welcome you on Facebook, or email us at [email protected] to join us this year. Follow us on Instagram, too! It’s going to be different but with many hands helping from our fantastic community, there is no doubt it’s going to be another rewarding, fun year working together to help those in need.
