It all started with a house hunt in Okotoks. It was 2013 and I was pregnant with my second baby. We had been renting for a few years in McKenzie Towne but over that time, we found it hard to meet neighbours in such a well-established area. With one small child in tow and another on the way, we were looking for community.
We were at a show suite in Cimarron when the sales representative pointed us towards what would become our future home, Legacy. I remember driving down the temporary road and seeing the arches up. We instantly knew that this was where we wanted to raise our two daughters.
Both my husband Steve and I are not originally from Calgary. I moved here, without knowing a single person, in 2006 to attend the Journalism program at SAIT. The first few years in Calgary were difficult as I was attending classes with other students that were approximately five years younger than me and meeting new friends was a challenge. We tried several different communities, from our condo on 17 Avenue to Chestermere, but it wasn’t until we purchased our Legacy property that we truly felt like we had come home.
Something unexpected and wonderful happened when we moved into this community. At first, we were the only house as others were being built all around us. But as our neighbours moved in, we decided to become the welcome wagon. We would pop over whenever a moving truck was in front with a box of chocolates or some flowers. Something small to say welcome and it resulted in us meeting so many people that, like us, wanted to make Legacy a community that we could call our own.
Not only have we had the pleasure of meeting so many dear friends that have become like family to us, but we have also experienced the epitome of community spirit. In the early years, we had neighbourhood BBQs, block parties, and play dates at the park. During COVID we watched as our neighbours rallied around and supported each other with birthday/graduation parades, gifting ninjas, and socially distanced driveway gatherings. We have seen the incredible impact of the Legacy Community Network and how they have expanded events and sports leagues so neighbours can meet other neighbours. All of this has created a community that has made me so proud to be a part of it.
