Mid-Sun’s February President’s Message

Hello Everyone!

We are now a few weeks into a new decade, getting used to saying 2020, and looking forward to the Family Day long weekend in February. Some classes at the community center have started – if you have not signed up for these yet, I encourage you to take a look, as there is quite a variety offered. I’m trying Zumba for the first time and am hoping my classmates will forgive me for running into them as I try to remember left from right.

Over these next few months, I thought I’d do something a little different. So instead of the President’s Message being all about me, no matter how fascinating that may be, I am going to use the opportunity to introduce members of the board. This month I’m focusing on the Vice President, Rick Cunningham.

I first met Rick when former President Mark Schmidt introduced him to me as a potential for the VP position, and he is one of the reasons I felt comfortable taking on the role of President. Rick moved to Sundance from Lake McKenzie about 15 years ago. Before that, he lived in 100 Mile House where he was the general manager for a fabrication facility that made items for export to other countries. Rick has been retired for four years but manages to keep himself busy volunteering for numerous organizations, including the Mustard Seed, the Drop-In Center, Cornerstone of Hope, and Renfrew. He also sings in a choir! Besides all this activity, Rick is a frequent babysitter for his ten grandchildren (ages 1 ½ to 10 years) and still finds time to hang out with his six daughters. One of Rick’s first sentences to me was “I just want to help the community however I can,” and he has certainly been doing that. His wide variety of experiences, calm, logical manner, great sense of humor, and willingness to tackle anything make him a terrific VP, and a welcome member of the board.

As for board activity, our major event in February is a board planning session; I should have an update on that for the next newsletter. We are still looking for someone to take on the board secretary position – if you would be interested in that or in volunteering for other committees, please email myself or Rick at [email protected] or [email protected].

In the meantime, enjoy February and Family Day!
