Mid-Sun’s January President’s Message

Holy Doodle, it’s 2020! Happy New Year to everyone.

A new year feels like a field of just fallen snow, waiting for footprints to be made. I’m not big on official New Year’s Resolutions but I do like a yearly theme. Last year it was “Do Something Different.” I studied Tarot Card reading, stuttered through Spanish lessons, toured Peru, and stumbled through skating lessons. This year my theme is “environment.” I am focusing on avoiding single-use bags, and I am determined to try to take transit at least once a week to see what impact that makes on my life.

A new year is also a great time to think about our current situation. I’ve read a few articles suggesting that community spirit isn’t there anymore, but that sure hasn’t been my experience in this community. Whenever there is a big snowfall, my neighbors often shovel my walk, and other people’s sidewalks as well. Even in the cold, people stroll through both Sundance and Midnapore saying hello to each other and stopping to chat. When someone got stuck on our street folks dashed out of their houses to help. My neighbors have stopped by to tell me I’ve forgotten to close my garage or lock my car. Just look at our Mid-Sun Blockwatch page! We have people all through the community warning about wildlife in the area, or potential car thieves. This all feels like wonderful community spirit to me.

Speaking of our Mid-Sun Blockwatch Facebook page, our Director of Social Media, Nikki Compton is looking into our several different Mid-Sun Facebook pages, and the possibilities for combining some of them into a repurposed Blockwatch page. She’ll be setting up a survey on the Blockwatch page so please watch for that and be sure to share your thoughts. You can also send me an email at [email protected] and I will pass that on to Nikki.

Another exciting activity going on is the work Joan and Darleen are doing regarding a seniors program in the community. Right now, they are in the research stage, talking with other communities to get their advice and looking into possibilities, and are hoping to move forward on this in the near future. If you have thoughts on this, or would like to work with Joan and Darleen, please email myself, [email protected], or our VP Rick Cunningham, [email protected], and we will pass those on.

As for the board, we have a number of committees established and intend to have a planning session in January to set goals for the year. We still need a secretary – if you’d be interested in helping out, we’d love to have you – contact me at [email protected].

Have you ever wondered how safe our communities are, or how we compare to other communities? If so, you can find out by visiting the City of Calgary website for crime statistics, located at https://www.calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Statistics/Calgary-Police-statistical-reports.aspx.

One more reminder about the casino coming up January 23 and 24. Volunteers are still needed, please contact Rose-Marie McKinnon at 403-256-7306 or email [email protected]

A big, huge, happy 2020 to everyone in our Mid-Sun community! I hope the New Year is filled with good fortune and many reasons to smile.
