Happy New Year! I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful holiday season.
The MLCA board of directors is committed to ensuring the MLCA Hall and surrounding facilities continue to meet the needs of our community. At our December meeting, the MLCA board approved spending $40,000 to replace the flooring in the lower hall and change outdoor rink and other lighting over to energy-efficient LED. In 2019, we spent $53,000 to resurface the outdoor tennis courts and added pickleball lines and nets. The MLCA generally receives grants from The City for up to 75% of capital expenditures required to maintain the facilities.
The MLCA Member Discount Program continues to grow, with 25 local businesses in the program, and more Marda Loop merchants joining each month. If you do not currently have a MLCA membership, join now to take advantage of discounts, which can quickly pay for the annual membership fee, while supporting local businesses.
The Fireside Chat in November was a great success with 67 in attendance to hear Dr. Michael King speak about The Aging Brain. Movie Night in November was also a hit, with 109 coming out to see the new version of The Lion King.
Registration is open for the January 22 Fireside Chat featuring historian Harry Sanders who will share the wonders and history of Marda Loop. There will be a free Movie Night at the hall on January 31, where the whole family can enjoy “The Princess Bride”.
The MLCA offers programs for all ages including Idea Lab, Intro to Art & Drawing, Playgroup, Preschool, Seniors Group, Swim Club, Yoga, Seniors Fit, Prancing Peanuts, Learn to Skate and Peanuts Hockey. Please check the MLCA website for details and to register. I always appreciate your comments and welcome your emails at [email protected].
All the best to you and your family for a happy and healthy New Year in 2020!
Doug Fraser, President
