Welcome May! Of all the year’s months, I enjoy May the most. Winter is behind us, days are longer, and our attention shifts to summer vacation planning, outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and the occasional beverage on a patio. After a long winter, it brings a renewed spirit for the year.
This is a great time to consider volunteering for your community. Please look at the “call for community volunteers” advertisement in this issue and consider joining us. We are looking for community members of all ages, professions, skills, and passions. There are a variety of grant and funding opportunities offered by the city, province, and other private and non-profit organizations that can be utilized. If you have an idea to better the community, perhaps we can work together to make it a reality. Also, if you enjoy project management, there are several building and lifecycle projects for the community hall that could use a dedicated project manager. Please consider attending our community association meetings, held at 7:00 pm, on the third Wednesday of every month, at the hall. For May, we’ll be meeting on the 15th.
Looking ahead, please stay tuned for information regarding our annual general meeting that will take place in June. All community members can attend and vote on key items, including board membership.
On May 3, 4, and 5, The Federation of Calgary Communities is hosting a series of free community-led “Jane’s Walks” across Calgary. These are the legacy of Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) who was an urbanist that championed walking through your city, observing and interacting with people, and creating a community with a strong sense of belonging. Either through your normal routines, or through a community Jane’s Walk, I hope that you have a chance to foster that spirit. If you have community inspirations to share, please bring them forward.
Happy spring
Sincerely,
Andrew
Vice-President
