The ongoing construction along 33 Avenue and Marda Loop is a transformative project aimed at creating a safer, more vibrant, and accessible community for Calgarians. While the work may have caused some disruptions, it’s important to recognize the broader benefits that will be realized once the construction season winds down later this month. With a goal to complete major elements of the Marda Loop Main Streets project by the end of November there is much to look forward to — not just in terms of improved infrastructure, but also in how the new design will prioritize pedestrian safety and encourage more active, community-focused spaces.

Progress and What’s Coming

The construction on 33 Avenue is progressing as planned, with several key elements of the project nearing completion. Notably, historic concrete stamps are being integrated into the new sidewalks, adding character and a sense of place to the area. This blend of modern infrastructure with historic elements helps preserve the unique charm of Marda Loop while making the space more welcoming for everyone.

This month, several enhancements are set to be completed, including the installation of urban braille along the sidewalks for better accessibility, as well as new benches, planters, and bike racks to create more inviting spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, work on 19 Street between 34 Avenue and 36 Avenue SW is wrapping up, contributing to the overall upgrade of the area.

A Key Milestone: Two-Way Traffic Returns to 33 Avenue

In November, two-way traffic was restored to 33 Avenue, marking a major milestone in the construction process. This change is part of the project’s larger goal to improve traffic flow and enhance safety. The Calgary Police Service will be on-site for traffic control to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruption during this period.

To further improve safety, the signal system at the intersection of 33 Avenue and 20 Street SW will be upgraded with a two-phase turn signal timing sequence. This will provide safer and more predictable movement for both eastbound and westbound traffic, with alternating left-turn cycles at the intersection. These changes are designed to keep traffic moving smoothly while also prioritizing the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.

Temporary Parking Solutions

While construction continues, temporary parking options have been put in place to help those who want to shop or visit Marda Loop’s local businesses. A 16-stall gravel lot located at 2039 34 Ave SW is now open, offering two free hours of parking during the day (from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm).

The lot is accessible via the south alley off 20 Street and is patrolled by Calgary Parking to ensure a smooth and safe experience for users.

Why Slowing Down Matters

Throughout the construction process, one of the most important messages for drivers and cyclists is to slow down. The construction zone is a work-in-progress, with crews and heavy equipment on site. But beyond the immediate needs of construction, slowing down helps ensure safety for everyone — not just workers, but also pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.

The new Marda Loop Main Streets project is designed to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, creating a safer, more walkable environment. As the community adapts to these changes, it’s vital that everyone respects the lower speed limits and takes extra caution when driving through the area. Slowing down allows you to react quickly to changes in traffic patterns and ensures the safety of others on the road, especially as new features like curb extensions, pedestrian rest areas, and bike racks are integrated into the streetscape.

A Vision for the Future of Marda Loop

The Marda Loop Main Streets project is about more than just roadwork; it’s about creating a dynamic public space that reflects the community’s identity. Once complete, 33 Avenue and 34 Avenue SW will offer:

• Improved Pedestrian Experience: With wider sidewalks, new curb extensions for better pedestrian safety, and seating areas where people can rest and socialize.

• Enhanced Mobility Options: A more balanced approach to transportation, with safer connections for those walking, cycling, and driving.

• Community-Centred Design: Thoughtful urban design that reflects Marda Loop’s unique character and fosters community gatherings and local business interactions.

33 Avenue will become a hub where pedestrians can move freely and safely, with convenient access to local shops, restaurants, and services. The goal is to create an environment that encourages people to stay longer, explore the area, and enjoy the rich character of Marda Loop — all while keeping the streets safe and accessible for everyone.

34 Avenue, meanwhile, will be redesigned as a sleek, shared corridor that accommodates pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The plan also integrates connections to the City’s 5A Network, a network of streets designed for people of all ages and abilities. The overarching goal of the project is to make Marda Loop a more welcoming destination for all, whether you’re commuting through or visiting for leisure.

Looking Ahead

As the construction season wraps up and the weather cools, the vision for Marda Loop Main Streets is starting to take shape. While the roadwork and detours may be inconvenient in the short term, the long-term benefits will be well worth the wait. This project will not only enhance safety and mobility but will also celebrate the unique spirit of Marda Loop, turning the area into a place where people feel connected to their community and inspired to spend time.

In the meantime, as construction wraps up, we encourage drivers to be patient and slow down. The new Marda Loop is shaping up to be a space that benefits everyone — pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and local businesses alike. Thank you for your continued understanding and support as we work together to make Marda Loop a safer and more enjoyable place to live and visit.
