The construction seems like it will never end in Marda Loop right now. It’s difficult to access businesses and hard to get anywhere within the neighbourhood.
When we as residents see the gaping holes in the middle of the street or we can’t get through with the construction, it’s hard to remember how all this started. I tried to access Shoppers Drug Mart the other day and had to cross in the middle of 33 Avenue just to get across.
“It is a pain point with the construction,” says Ophelia Liew, Project Manager, Design, City of Calgary ‘Main Streets’.
‘Main Streets’ is a City of Calgary project that identifies 24 different districts in the city. Marda Loop is one of them and is under construction now. The City is working on all the different components of the build and there are private construction projects underway as well.
If you want to view another ‘Main Streets’ project, Liew suggests you go to Montgomery-Bowness. There you can see the multi-use pathway which our community will have as well on 34 Avenue. The multi-use pathway will connect with the 5A network throughout the city. It will be safe for pedestrians, strollers and other modes of transportation.
The ‘Marda Loop Main Streets’ has four buckets, Liew explains, and one of them is the active and social lifestyle. Many aspects of development will be affected including vehicular traffic, traffic signals, character, and identity. Heritage signs and lighting are also part of the project.
Living in a post-covid world people want to be out and social in the community, explains Liew. Included in the ‘Main Streets’ is a park at Elizabeth Square on 18 Street and 34 Avenue SW and a pocket park at the end of 34 Avenue SW there will be green spaces that include space for pollinators and water fountains.
