From dusting to winter deep-freeze! Some describe Calgary as a very conservative city, but if our weather is a barometer, then we seem to like extremes. About mid-month our heat stopped working in our apartment. It was three days without heat at -34 degrees Celsius. I mention this not to tell of a story of survival, but to illustrate the importance of community. Our unit wasn’t working (Yes, Elsie and I were cold and she was wearing a coat and scarf), but it could have been much worse if our neighbouring apartments weren’t working as well. We weren’t comfortable, but we were okay. First of all, let’s be thankful for that sense of community and secondly let’s thank all those tradesmen who lost sleep working around the clock for days to respond.
Mid-January we returned to winter. In a big way. At least we were able to get the rink in. One of our neighbours has offered to host a skate party for the whole community. The Richmond Hill Baptist Church requested time on Friday, February 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. What a great opportunity to meet your neighbours! If you are like me and don’t usually skate (I haven’t laced up since 1965), there will still be hot chocolate and hot dogs and neighbours to meet! Hope to see some of you there.
Having said all of that, we still have room for several positions on the board. We are looking for a Treasurer. We also need a Maintenance Director as well as a Membership Director. We asked for one Rink Coordinator, and we have two. Even though it is a shortened season due to weather, we are moving ahead full steam as you see above.
It is amazing the amount of work that goes into refreshing a website! In our last issue, we told you that the website would be fully functional by now. I didn’t consider time for tweaking. Parts are now operational, but we must wait until next month to see the full functionality of our website.
I mentioned earlier in this article that our weather has turned into winter. Constable Richard Wall spoke at our last board meeting. He reminded us that with this weather we should be careful when we are warming vehicles for travel. Some have left keys or fobs in an unlocked vehicle. Thieves are opportunists. The same can be said for the controls of an electric garage door opener. I know I used to clip it in my visor for convenience. If it is visible, it is not just easy for you to use, but it gives thieves access to your garage and a possible link right into your house. Don’t keep openers or fobs visible. I put an air freshener where my opener was.
