Southwood President’s Message – March

Spring is around the corner! It seems like the snow has been around for too long and it’s time to see some of it melt away.

I wanted to send a huge-thank you to all our volunteers who supported us for Winterfest. We are so happy to be able to provide programming for the community and we are looking forward to bringing more throughout the year.

Please note that the board has updated their emails. We are no longer using the email [position]@southwoodconnects.ca. Please visit the contact page to see the new emails.

This year, we are planning on doing some big renovations at the hall. As this is a City building, there are some lifecycle items that we need to address and we thought that while we’re doing that, we might as well improve some of the dated spaces. Most of our attention will be placed on the Pioneer Hall where we are planning to replace the windows and doors, update the kitchen cabinets and appliances, update the washrooms, and replace the flooring. This is a large project with a large price tag. To help cushion the blow of the costs, we will be applying for the Capital Conservation Grant from the City. We will keep everyone updated on the progress of the application and renovation through social media and the website. Our timeline for completion depends on the approval from the grant, but we are aiming for an early fall completion.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2023, starting at 7:00 pm. This year, we will be looking for a treasurer as well as directors-at-large to support. The treasurer position is an executive board member role. You do not need to be a trained accountant or bookkeeper to take on this role, however, you must be highly organized. Our outgoing treasurer, Jeff, has offered to support the new person in this role until they are comfortable. As for the director-at-large positions, we are looking for directors who can support their colleagues throughout the year. The benefit with being a director is that you have voting authority on all motions. To vote at the AGM, you must have a valid membership. Please register for your free membership today at www.southwoodconnects.ca/membership.

Our March board meeting will take place on the 16 of this month. If you have an idea that you would like to present, you are invited to join us for the first 30 minutes. All guests do not have to stay for the entire length of the meeting. We will be gathering in the Pioneer Hall starting at 7:00 pm.

Have a wonderful March, everyone!
