Hi Everyone,

We are deep into fall now and the weather has been beautiful! I for one am quite pleased we didn’t experience the snow at the end of September like we did last year.

On September 24, we held our Annual General Meeting. Although there were a few technical glitches, all in all it was a successful meeting! This year, we said ‘see ya later’ to five wonderful volunteers: Denise, Dorothy, Paul, Tricia, and Vivien. I want to personally thank you all for your time and dedication you have put into this board of directors. Without you, we would not be where we are today. With the outgoing members, we welcomed some new board members. Taking over as Secretary will be Amanda Taffs. This will be Amanda’s second time serving on the board and we are so pleased to welcome her back. She brings a great attitude and desire to make Southwood the best it can be. Acting as the Director of Development and Traffic is Joan Clark. Joan brings with us a wealth of knowledge having experience with the City of Calgary and has a love for our community. Joan had to jump into her role quickly as we worked with the community and the City regarding the sound wall on Southland Drive. Taking over the Director of Programs position is Christine Desjardins. Christine brings a lot of energy and is excited to work with the community to bring in new programming. You may have seen her working hard in her garden this summer at the Southwood Community Garden. At the AGM, we made Steve Eglisson an official board member by creating the Director of Facility position!

In September, the City circulated a letter to community members located in proximity to the sound wall on Southland Drive between 14 Street and Elbow Drive. The letter informed the community that they would be demolishing a 250m stretch of the sound wall and replacing with a temporary post and cable fence. The reason for the wall coming down is it is starting to crumble and is becoming a hazard to the public. The CA will be keeping everyone informed on this project through the community website at www.southwoodconnects.ca.

One last note, when posting information on our community platforms on social media, please use kind language and avoid anything foul. We have created these platforms as ways to inform the community on serious issues or problems and to look for solutions. If foul or negative comments continue by users, we will be implementing a policy that would see these people removed from the platform. We get that people are passionate about certain topics, but in order to work together we need to create a positive space.

Our board meeting will be held November 26, 2020 starting at 7:00 pm. All are welcome!

Thanks,

Becky
