After 14 years of filling various roles on the Strathcona Christie Aspen Community Association (SCA) Board, I will officially step down after the SCA AGM on May 10. With eight committed board members in place, it is time for me to get out of the way and let these new perspectives find their voice. I am confident that I leave the SCA in great hands and in a sound financial position. I hope to continue to volunteer for events that I have grown fond of – the seniors’ dances and skating events in particular – and help out where needed. What am I going to do with all the time on my hands? I have plans to spend more time with family, expand my garden this summer, and continue to pursue a creative path. I do not regret a minute spent on the SCA and my community; it has taught me new skills and brought me good friends. I cannot recommend more highly getting involved with the SCA CA. So, if you have some spare time on your hands, give them a call!
May is a busy month at the SCA. As I mentioned above, the SCA is hosting its AGM on May 10, where we will recap the year, talk about grant projects, table audited financial statements, and approve the nominations of board members; SCA community members are encouraged to attend. On May 21, the SCA will host its annual Recycle Day. Check the website to find out what you can recycle and dispose of on that day but be advised that there will not be a paper shredding truck available on that day – they were all booked up! On May 27, the SCA will have an onsite paper shredding truck in the parking lot for members. On May 26, in partnership with Amica Aspen Woods, the SCA will host a Seniors’ Dance; tickets are available online or by contacting the SCA office. We are starting a walking group and our first walk is planned for May 2 at 10:00 am. We will meet in the Sobeys parking lot and afterwards head to Good Earth for coffee, courtesy of the SCA. Send us an email if you would like to join us. Strollers and dogs are welcome! Keep an eye on the SCA website for information on summer camps and programming for all ages that the SCA offers.
This message will continue to appear but be relabelled as ‘Message from the Board,’ and the board members will take this opportunity to introduce themselves and tell you what their vision is for the SCA.
I’m not going anywhere, not moving, not flying south – I will be around. I want to thank everyone who has helped me these past 14 years and my family especially for being supportive and helping when called upon. All the board members that I have worked with, the volunteers and tenants, elected officials and City support staff, thank you – it has been a rewarding experience. To the staff through the years and in particular, Trevor and Shelley Lakatos and Cathy Duke, seriously I couldn’t have done it without you, and this isn’t goodbye because we have become good friends, I’ll be waiting on the back deck with a glass of wine!
Please support your community association, help out where you can, renew your memberships and take care of our neighbourhoods.
