Hawkwood’s Acting President’s Message for July

Hello Hawkwood!

As we just passed its 10th anniversary, I am reflecting on the origins of Calgary’s Neighbour Day to commemorate the support and generosity of neighbours following the 2013 floods. This event, held annually on the third Saturday of June, continues as a way to provide communities with the opportunity to gather to recognize how these connections matter to our families and friends. In this spirit, I would like to acknowledge our neighbours who volunteer in many capacities associated with the Hawkwood Community Association (HCA).

Thank you to all the volunteers who stepped up to run a successful U4-U8 Spring soccer program that wrapped up in June. This program could not run without the support of volunteers, and I hope everyone enjoyed making new connections with neighbours while on the fields.

Thank you to our Events Committee volunteers for organizing the HCA Neighbour Day BBQ on June 17 at the Hawkwood Community Park (HCP) and to the volunteers who distributed door hangers to houses around the community advertising the event. A lot of work goes into organizing an event of this size and everyone’s efforts are greatly appreciated.

I would also like to acknowledge our current HCA Board of Directors for volunteering your time to our community. Being new to this position, I have both appreciated and relied on the support I receive from Donna, Laura, Danielle, Justin, Tricia, Anne, Kawal, Jodie, Erick, Shannon, Isaac, Joanne, and our two newest members, Pia and Lori, who answered our call to serve on the Board.

Thanks also to Mark, our LEAF Coordinator, for diligently managing the program responsible for Hawkwood’s colourful flower displays and landscaping maintenance.

Additionally, I would like to acknowledge and thank our Programs Coordinator, Heather. There would be no programs without her dedication to our community, and she works tirelessly with many volunteers, including those associated with Pickleball, Tennis, the HCP Committee, Ice Rink maintenance, and other programs as they are organized over the year.

I also want to acknowledge the many neighbours in our community who sign-up when there are calls for volunteers during the year for casino fundraising events, community cleanups, community garden maintenance, and other planned events.

As the saying goes, many hands make light work. We still have some vacant positions on our board. If you would like to meet your neighbours and are interested in exploring available volunteer opportunities in your community, please send me an email at [email protected].

In gratitude and kindness,

Michele del Valle
