Thank you to everyone who attended our eighth Annual General Meeting we will have an update on new directors in the December issue, as this issue was unfortunately due two days before the AGM took place. An AGM is a big event for our board, it’s an opportunity to present our financials to our members, be held accountable on decisions we’ve made in the interest of our community, talk with residents about issues or concerns in the community, and be nominated and elected to serve as a volunteer on the board for a two-year term. On that note, I need to make a correction from the September edition. I miscounted the years many of us have served as volunteers and turns out Bill Riddell, our long-time Treasurer, is also a founding member and, along with me, is the only founder remaining. Bill joined in 2012 as a Director and moved into the Treasurers role the following year where he remains today. Bill, my apologies for the error, and thank you for your long-time service and dedication to our community!
You may have seen some activity on the upper soccer field this past month – this was all thanks to soil donations from Inland Aggregates and Genesis Land Corporation and donated skid steer use by Travis Currie from Hire-A-Son contracting. We used almost three trucks of soil to help level out a tennis court sized plot for our seasonal ice rink. The idea behind the dirt is to berm the low end so we do not have to use wood forums or a liner, and save water, time, and effort in maintenance. Thank you to everyone for making this project come together; now we need to make a call for our annual Ice Team to help shovel snow a few times a week and flood. In early October, we were informed FC Metro soccer club was cancelling their winter indoor season and will likely not return in 2021. Due to this, we found ourselves once again seeking a new soccer provider and, after careful consideration, we’ve chosen to partner with Calgary Blizzards. The Blizzards are the oldest and largest soccer club in the city and, to us, that means reliability and trust! Costs and modelling for the spring program will be near identical to our previous provider and coaches are once again provided. I am very excited about this partnership; I see it as a long-term relationship with quality instructing, which will carry our players from U4 up to U18 in both recreational and competitive routes. And for the elite few, the Blizzards are the most successful program in the province graduating players to college and beyond.
Thank you to all the wonderful Halloween submissions in our coloring and carving contest, and to Tracy Chapin, our long-time Secretary, for spear heading this contest once again. Winners have been contacted and prizes have been distributed.
Please remember to observe a moment of silence for our fallen loved ones this Remembrance Day. Although many ceremonies will be limited due to the pandemic, there is still much around town such as the Field of Crosses along Memorial Drive. If you wish to attend one of several ceremonies in Calgary, check out the Field of Crosses, Hangar Flight Museum, Central Memorial Park, Battalion Park, The Military Museum, Jubilee Auditorium, Fort Calgary, Kerby Centre, or CP Rail headquarters.
Our next event is the third annual Christmas Light Contest, and I think we need to go big this year to end 2020 with a symbolic light of hope.
