Upcoming Trustee Elections
by Shannon Cook, Chair, CCSD Board of Trustees
The municipal election, which includes school board trustee elections, is coming up on Monday, October 20, 2025. Your CCSD Board of Trustees will be seeing changes. At a minimum, there will be two new faces on the Board of Trustees as we say goodbye to two of our long-term trustees, Mary Martin and Linda Wellman, who have served as trustees for 18 and 35 years respectively. We thank trustees Martin and Wellman for their long-service and dedication to the Calgary Catholic School District. As elected officials, school board trustees are accountable to the constituents in the wards they serve. Voting for school trustees is important as they are crucial for effective education systems and provide governance, direction, and accountability for school districts. Catholic school trustees have the added responsibility of advocating for and protecting Catholic education. For more information on the candidates, please visit electionscalgary.ca.
Parent and Trustee Forums
One of the ways our district helps facilitate effective trustee relationships between home, school, and community is through our Parent and Trustee forums. These in-person forums are an opportunity to meet the board, Chief Superintendent and senior admin, participate in discussions, and be informed about important matters. Parent and Trustee forums reflect a continued commitment to strengthening parental engagement and deepening the connection between families, trustees, and the district. This year’s forums will include the School Council Executive Orientation, along with three Parent and Trustee Forums, each with a distinct focus. We hope you will join us at these important events, and we look forward to meeting our community. For more information, please visit cssd.ab.ca/school-council.
Catholic Education Week
In Alberta, Catholic Education Week will be celebrated October 18 to 24, 2025. This special time provides an opportunity to celebrate and reflect with gratitude on the countless blessings found within the Catholic educational community. On Catholic Education Sunday, Catholic dioceses across the province recognize and celebrate the precious gift of Catholic education. A committee of representatives from the ACSTA, GrACE, and Catholic school jurisdictions has been preparing prayers, activities, and resources to assist us in living out this year’s theme which is, “Anchored in Christ, A Beacon of Hope.” This theme speaks to the importance of Catholic schools to be places where students not only encounter hope but are also encouraged to share it as radiant witnesses in the world. As parents, you can also make a difference by joining one of your local GrACE committees. Advocating for Catholic education and providing a parent perspective will help ensure that the collective parent voice is heard at all levels of decision making. In closing, on behalf of our Board of Trustees, we thank you for the opportunity to have served as trustees for Calgary Catholic. It has been a privilege.
