June is an exciting month in our city. It signals the start of summer and soon our city will look beautiful and green (at least for a few weeks). The June theme for my office is nature. This month we acknowledge and appreciate the power and beauty of nature in our city. Whether it is Calgary’s parks, rivers, or wildlife—nature is around us every single day. That close relationship has considerable benefits, but also poses significant challenges for Calgarians.

Flooding in Calgary

June is typically our period of highest flows on both the Elbow and Bow Rivers. We don’t need to look any further than the 2013 floods to remember just how powerful water can be. The City has some information to better prepare Calgarians for flooding events. You can find more details at www.calgary.ca/floodinfo.

Ward 12 Speaker Series: Living Close to Nature

This month my office is launching our first ever Ward 12 Speaker Series. Over the course of this term we will be hosting interesting speakers to discuss important issues facing our city. Our inaugural event will focus on the benefits and the challenges of living so close to nature.

Details are as follows:

When: Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 6:30pm-8:30pm

Where: Cardel Theatre – 180 Quarry Park Blvd

This event will start with an open house from 6:30pm-7:30pm. My office has invited a number of groups that work closely with nature to host booths in the theatre lobby. Attendees can learn more about Calgary’s natural environment, or chat with me about the issues facing our city. I’ll also be looking for your ideas on future Speaker Series topics.

Speaker presentations will begin in the auditorium at 7:30pm. We have two terrific speakers:

Chris Manderson, Urban Conservation Lead – Calgary Parks

Chris and his team have been responsible for the new trail cam program in a number of parks throughout the city. He will talk about our proximity to wildlife and how to ensure that relationship remains positive into the future.

Lesley Peterson – Fisheries Biologist – Trout Unlimited Canada

Lesley will speak about the fish species that call Calgary’s rivers home. She will talk about the importance of maintaining high water quality, and why Calgary’s urban fishery is so unique.

My office and I are really looking forward to this event and really hope you will join us!
