October’s President’s Message for Sage Hill

Fall is a beautiful time of year and the colours around Sage Hill are breathtaking and everyone should get out and walk our pathways, especially along Nose Creek. On behalf of the Sage Hill Community Association, I wanted to give an update on what was accomplished in the month of September.

SHCA held an afternoon of live music in partnership with: Friends of the Federation of Calgary Communities, Calgary Arts & Development, Rise Up Calgary, and the Calgary Foundation. Thanks to their help we were able to bring in The Torchettes, Tenevieve Micheletti, and Daniel Brown and Dragon Fli Empire to each do a 45-minute live performance at three different locations in Sage Hill. It was a great first-time experience to host live music and made us realize we need to do this more often and make it bigger! A huge thank you to Sage Hill Community Association Vice President Adam Loria for taking the lead on this event.

The ice rinks berm had a second grass seed application thanks to a seed donation from Isaac Wing of Air Tech Industries and my labour. Unfortunately, the first seed application by the City in June didn’t take thanks to a single heavy rainfall the day after application followed by at least a three-week drought. Hopefully, this mid-September application awards us grass in the fall.

Two of our Little Library boxes got a new coat of paint and a pretty good bondo application to the Library in the Meadows to fix damage caused by a woodpecker. Also, the shingles were replaced on the Library in Symons Gate.

Our Annual Christmas Light Display Contest will be returning for a fourth year and if anyone has any items to donate as prizes, please contact us via social media or at [email protected] so we can recognize you as a sponsor on our flyers.

October 18 is our Municipal Election Day and once again Calgarians will be going to the polls to cast a ballot for Mayor, Councillor, Public and CSSD School Board Trustees, and an Equalization Referendum. I encourage all who are eligible to get out and vote. The city’s website lists a few options where Sage Hill residents can vote: Option 1 – Advanced polls October 4 to 8 from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm at Symons Valley United Church. Option 2 – Advance polls at City Hall in “City Hall Room 1” (same hours of operation as the first Option). Option 3 – Advance polls weekend on Saturday October 9 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm or Sunday October 10 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Kenneth D. Taylor School (in Evanston). Option 4 – Election Day October 18 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm at Bearspaw Christian Academy. To check on your voting location, visit www.calgary.ca/election. This election is very important to us as Calgarians and even more to us as Albertans as the Equalization Referendum we will be voting on will affect Albertans for multiple generations. As such, I am going to be offering my services to all Sage Hill residents, if you need a ride to and from a polling station on Election Day, email [email protected] or send us a private message on Facebook or Instagram, @SageHillYYC. Include your name and phone number and I will contact you to work out a ride.

Our next meeting is:

Tuesday October. 12, 2021 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Via Zoom

Thank you.

Ross Utigard
