Presidents Message Sandstone MacEwan

As you read this note, the Sandstone Community Association Annual General Meeting would have taken place and members on the Board would have changed slightly. I will post a list of your new Board of Directors in next month’s newsletter.

Remembrance Day is November 11th and because it is on a Sunday this year more families will be able attend one of the many ceremonies that will take place in and around Calgary to recognize this important date. The first world war formally ended at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Please take the time for two minutes of silence at 11:00am in honor of all those who fought and lost their lives fighting for their country.

As usual, we will be looking for volunteers to assist with the hockey rink this year. Last year there were evenings with only a couple of volunteers cleaning and flooding the rink and it’s too much work. This rink is available to all individuals, regardless of age, so whether you play hockey or not, please consider assisting when you can. It typically works to clean and flood in the evening, however it can certainly happen during the day if there are individuals available.

We will be putting up Christmas lights again at the hockey rink and would be happy to have a few volunteers to assist us in doing this.

We completed the work at Sandstone Park this spring and look forward to seeing you skating around the oval this winter. We want to give a special thank you to Nicola and the 224 Scout Group for planting and maintaining the beautiful planters around the oval! The Christmas lights will be installed again and lit up throughout the Christmas season. We had many skaters come out last season thanks to the hard work of rink volunteers Brad Beckett and Joe Wensink.

We are actively trying to fill the dates for our SMCA Casino January 25 and 26, 2019 at the Calgary Casino. The SMCA is very fortunate to benefit from Casino fundraisers roughly every 18 months that allow us the operating funds to support our many community initiatives including rink maintenance, music in the park, community clean up and so on. Thanks to those who have already signed up, we really appreciate your assistance. There are many volunteer positions as well as shifts during the day or evening and you will be trained when you get there. Willa Wu is our interim Casino Director and can be reached at [email protected].
