A June Message from the SCA President

As I write this, the SCA remains closed; however, we have put together online classes for Tai Chi and Chair Yoga – check our website for more information. Also, on our website is a robust list of volunteers from all the communities; folks who are willing to help with groceries or even just a phone call to check in. If you need help, don’t be afraid to reach out. There are numerous resources listed on our website as well.

The City of Calgary is encouraging citizens to commit to three simple acts of kindness to support their neighbours, their community, and the city. Sometimes it can be difficult to know exactly how to help. That’s why they have launched www.calgary.ca/helpingothers – an online collection of resources, ideas, and inspiration on how you can help others during the pandemic.

The City is starting to open various businesses at limited capacity, with strict social distancing rules – I’m not sure what that will look like or what it means for the SCA, but hopefully we will have an update for you soon.

I can tell you that our Community Garden is open, and gardeners are busy planting. In May, the SCA partnered with 2 Gals in a Garden to run two online hands-on gardening workshops which were both very successful. If you enjoy gardening, Marlene Fritzler is looking for help with the maintenance of the Strathcona entranceway. You can contact her at [email protected].

Our tennis courts are now open, and singles play is allowed with members of the same household. Small, positive steps forward.

The SCA has been hit hard, suffering a 99% loss of revenue but expenses continue. It will likely take some time for us to open the building for events and programs. If you are in a position to help, we would appreciate your support. Please consider purchasing or renewing your SCA Membership. $20/family for a year – it would really help us out. I am confident that the SCA will be hosting programs and events again soon and when that time comes you will be able to say you leant a hand to make it happen.

A heartfelt thank you to the SCA staff that have stayed at their posts even at significantly reduced wages. I honestly do not know what we would have done without them!
