New K-6 Curriculum Implementation
by Cathie Williams, Chair, CCSD Board of Trustees
The new, mandated provincial curriculum in English Language Arts and Literature (ELAL), Mathematics, and Physical Education and Wellness was implemented in K-6 schools across Alberta at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.
The purpose was to develop an updated curriculum for elementary students that provided the knowledge and skills needed for their future success. We were pleased that many of the recommendations we provided to the government in response to their first drafts were incorporated into the revised versions.
Here are eight things to know about the new curriculum implementation:
- The new, finalized ELAL and Mathematics curriculums were implemented district-wide for kindergarten to Grade 3 students
- The new, finalized Physical Education and Wellness curriculum was implemented district-wide for kindergarten to Grade 6 students
- CCSD has 54 elementary (K–6) schools and 43 elementary/junior high schools (K–9) schools
- Fifty percent of the new curriculum content is the same as the previous version
- Assessment remains the same, which is outcomes based
- CCSD also chose to pilot the new K-6 French Immersion Language Arts and Language (FILAL) curriculum in schools beginning September
- CCSD has a Supervisor of New Curriculum Implementation, as well as a group of committed New Curriculum Implementation Success team members. An implementation roadmap was developed to highlight key strategies to guide the transition between the old and new curriculum
- On-demand professional learning opportunities are also available for our teachers to support the new curriculum implementation
We look forward to continuing to work with Alberta Education on the new curriculum. More information about the province’s new K-6 curriculum is available for parents/guardians on the new Learn Alberta site – https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/ciihub/en/home, which is the central location for all curriculum-related content including a Curriculum 101 video, implementation timelines, and subject-specific overviews.
