A critical role for trustees of the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) is that of advocacy to ensure that students have inspiring learning spaces in their communities. CCSD continues to experience growth pressures in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere, and as such, this planning is crucial.

Capital priorities are revisited annually, based on growth trends. With a projection for the 2020-2021 school year of over 58,000 students and a growth rate of over 2 percent, our 116 schools have an average occupancy rate of over 87 percent, with many close to, or over, 100 percent. The imperative for new infrastructure is clear.

CCSD’s 2021-2024 Capital Plan includes requests for 20 new projects including seven K-6/K-9 schools, two high school modernizations and expansions, three innovative new high schools, including an Extended Learning Centre, and eight major modernization requests.

One of our most urgent needs is for St. Martin de Porres. St. Martin de Porres serves grades 7-12 and is Airdrie’s only Catholic high school. It sits at 106 percent utilization, well beyond capacity. By 2024, this facility will exceed 160 percent utilization. As there are no other suitable high school sites that are available in the Airdrie area, this facility must be expanded and enhanced. Other Year 1 priorities include: an elementary school in the community of Redstone, elementary/junior high schools in the communities of Legacy, Nolan Hill, and Walden, a new high school in west Calgary and modernizations to St. Bonaventure and St. Benedict. Your Board of Trustees commits to continuing to advocate and work with our provincial partners to ensure that our students have optimal learning spaces as close to home as possible. Thank you for your support as we close out an unprecedented 2019-2020 school year. We want to wish all of our students a safe, healthy and happy summer and we look forward to welcoming our students back into our schools when we have been cleared by Alberta Health to do so.
