As a new school year begins, thoughts turn to fall and winter activities. In the new reality that is living with COVID-19 and the inherent social distancing restrictions, the range of safe activities may seem a bit limited. Well, look no further. Nordic skiing may be just what your family is looking for.

Nordic generally refers to two main disciplines: cross country skiing and biathlon. Depending upon the specific club and program, practices are generally held year-round, in an outdoor environment. There are several places to ski in and around Calgary, most notably the Shaganappi and Confederation Park golf courses and the Canmore Nordic Centre.

Cross-country and biathlon ski programs are suited to participants of all ages, interests, and abilities from those new to Nordic skiing to those desiring to excel at a high level of national and international competition. Programs follow Sport Canada’s Sport For Life model and are designed to meet the physical, mental, emotional and cognitive developmental needs of participants. In the late spring, summer and fall months, athletes often participate in dryland training which includes such activities as roller skiing, hiking, running, ski striding, strength training and balance and agility drills. During the winter months, athletes will participate in activities focusing on both classic and skate ski techniques and, for the biathlon programs specifically, the shooting skills that are a component of this discipline. The development of aerobic fitness will be emphasized throughout the season as well. In addition, athletes have the ability to participate in a variety of different events from family-friendly low-key races, or loppets, to more competitive cross-country and biathlon races. The main focus is always the importance of having fun.

As training and events are held outdoors all year around, Nordic skiing is one of the few sports that align with COVID-19 social distancing policies and procedures. This sport provides a fantastic opportunity to be active while at the same time practicing social distancing.

Hopefully this article has piqued an interest in a sport that you may not be that familiar with and has provided you with a new way to stay healthy, safe, and active.
