Finally! The provincial government has announced capital for the construction of the North Central Calgary Public High School! This is a momentous accomplishment for our communities and validates the needs we have been expressing for so very long.
For over a decade, residents of north central Calgary (including myself) have been sounding the alarm that our communities are in desperate need of a public high school. For all that time, we watched as infrastructure needs of other communities were met while it appeared that we were not on anyone’s radar. In the last two years, increasing community pressure resulted in design phase approval of the project. However, we still lacked the capital needed to actually build a school.
While many of us have championed this cause but will not see our kids attending this school, I believe I speak for all of us in saying that we are thrilled that future generations will attend a high school near their home. This future school will be an essential hub of Ward 3 and a focal point of community activity.
A very big thank you to the provincial government for recognizing the needs of north central Calgarians. Minister Sawhney and MLA Yaseen were instrumental in this decision, as well as former MLA Kleinsteuber. MP Rempel has also been a fierce advocate for this school. This speaks volumes to what a group of elected officials in all orders of government can do together when they rally behind community needs.
To the countless members of the community who wrote letters, posted on social media, came out to rallies and spoke with the media – YOU are the reason we are getting this school. I am so proud of the advocates and the volunteers in Ward 3 who look out for each other and the best interests of this community. I am proud to serve you and will continue to amplify our voices.
